faramir son of denethor, prince of ithilien.. the last of the ruling stewards of Gondor

Name/Title: Faramir

Son of Denethor II

Brother of Boromir

Lord of Emyn Arnen

Prince of Ithilien

Captain of Gondor

Steward of Gondor

DoB-Death: III 2983 - IV 82 (120 years)

Race: Men *good*

Division: Dúnedain

Culture: Gondorians

Home: Gondor

Parents: Denethor II & Finduilas

Marriage/Spouse: 3019 TA to Eowyn (White Lady of Rohan)

Origin of Name: Faramir's name is quite questionable. It is definite that the -mir in Faramir's name means "Jewel" or "precious thing". The Fara part of his name is the hard part. Far, in Elvish means 'sufficient' or 'adequate'. If we go by facts and see the relationship between his father and his brother and him, his name could mean 'sufficient jewel', while his brother's name means 'precious jewel'.

Titles:

Son of Denethor II/Brother of Boromir (these are NOT official titles): Faramir was the younger second of Denethor.

Lord of Emyn Arnen: A title given to Faramir by Aragorn, who granted him the hills of Emyn Arnen for his residence as Prince of Ithilien, Gondor's lands east of the Great River.

Prince of Ithilien: A royal title granted to Faramir the Steward by Aragorn on his accession to the throne of Gondor, he dwelt these lands with his spouse, Eowyn.

Captain of Gondor: A former title to Faramir before the death of father and the possession as Lord of Emyn Arnen/Prince of Ithilien. He was captain of the Rangers of Gondor.

Steward of Gondor: Originally the honorary title of the chief counsellor to the King of Gondor. The title became hereditary from the time of Steward Pelendur of the House of Húrin. After the loss of King Eärnur in Minas Morgul, Mardil Voronwë became the first Ruling Steward, and his descendants ruled Gondor until the time of Denethor II, when Aragorn was crowned as King of the Reunited Kingdom.

Denethor II became Steward (2984) of Gondor after the death of his father, Ecthelion, died. He proved a masterful lord, holding the rule of all things in his own hand and said little. He listened to counsel, and then followed his own mind. He married late (2976) to Finduilas, daughter of Adrahil of Dol Amroth. Finduilas was a lady of great beaty and gentle heart but before twelve years had passed she died. Denethor loved her greatly and had become much more grim and silent than before. Finduilas had withered in the guarded city, as a flower of the seaward vales set upon a barren rock. The shadow of the east filled her with horror, and she turned her eyes ever south to the sea she missed.

As time drew on to the War of The Ring (Later years of the Third Age), Denethor's sons grew to manhood. Boromir was five years the elder and was beloved by his father. He was very much like him in face and pride, but in little else. He was a man that took no wife and delighting chiefly in arms; fearless and strong, but caring little for lore, save the tales of old battles. Faramir, the younger, was like Boromir in looks but otherwise in mind. He read the hearts of men as shrewdly as his father, but what he read moved him sooner to pity than to scorn.

Faramir was opposite of his brother in very many ways. He was gentle in bearing, and a lover of lore and of music, and therefore by many in those days his courage was judged less than his brother's. Faramir didn't seek glory in danger without a purpose.

Denethor's dislike of Gandalf is probably because of Faramir's love for Gandalf. Faramir welcomed Gandalf whenever he came to the city of Gondor, and he learned what he could from Gandalf's wisdom; and in this as in many other matters that he displeased his father.

There was no sibling rivalry between the brothers Faramir and Boromir. There was a great love, and there always had been since childhood to adulthood. Boromir helped and protected Faramir when he was young. During their childhood it did not seem possible to Faramir that any one in Gondor could rival Boromir, heir of Denethor, Captain of the White Tower.

After Boromir's death, Faramir had taken both jobs, as heir of Denethor and Captain of the White Tower. He soon left the positions after the War of The Ring, and the return of Isildur's Heir, Aragorn II Elessar.

Love

In the Return of the King Faramir is cast away into the House of Healing to tend his wounds. In coincidence the White Lady of Rohan, Eowyn, is also brought to the House of Healing after her wound in the Battle of Pelennor.

At first this love is one-sided. Faramir meets Eowyn in the gardens of the House of Healing and immediately falls in love with her. He sees not only beauty in Eowyn but far deeper into her soul. Like a love-infested school boy, Faramir takes up most of his time in the House of Healing to offer companionship with Eowyn, tending to her every needs. He wants to please her and win her heart, even with the knowledge that she loves someone else (Aragorn).

As time passes their friendship becomes a strong bond, and Eowyn eventually realizes that Aragorn's heart belongs to Arwen Evenstar. Faramir lets her understand that their bond could be even more, although he has hinted before, and Eowyn breaks out of her shell. She decides to give Faramir her heart, the shadow departs from her, and she is healed. she becomes shieldmaiden no longer, and becomes a healer where she admits she does not desire to be a queen (be Aragorn's wife).

After several months of parting (Eowyn must go back to her home land to reunite with her brother, Eomer) they wed and dwell in the lands of Emyn Arnen in peace.
